Last month, following a sharp rise in speeding offences and incidents, the Conservatives on Bolton Council requested a meeting with Greater Manchester Police to discuss the persistent issue of speeding motorists. With roads having been quieter earlier in the year, some motorists took this an opportunity to increase their speed to dangerous levels. Now that roads are becoming busier, we must do all we can to keep our roads safe.
Following a meeting between the Cabinet on Bolton Council and GMP, the Force has been visibly tackling the issues of speeding throughout the borough of Bolton. Social media and stories in the local press have shown the success GMP has had since our intervention, with large numbers of speeders being issued Traffic Order Reports, fined and in some cases arrested. Interventions include patrols and GMP’s ongoing operation, Operation Portman, dealing with motorists on the following roads, to name a few:
- Salford Road, Cutacre
- Bury New Road, Breightmet
- Chorley Old Road, Johnson Fold
- Manchester Road, Westhoughton
- Bolton Road, Kearsley
- Blackburn Road, Astley Bridge
- Stich-mi-lane, Harwood
Cllr Nadim Muslim, Executive Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said
"I am pleased that during our meeting, we discussed a positive approach to tackling speeding in our borough. Too many motorists think they can get away with it but this is not the case and the number of fines and arrests show this to be true. By working together, we can do more to keep our roads safe, especially for our children. I am also working with GMP on the ability for local groups to host Community Speed Watch initiatives in partnership, helping keep our localities safer."
Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr David Greenhalgh, commented
"I have great admiration for all the police have done and continue to do for us, especially with everything that has happened this year. Our belief in partnership working has meant that local Conservatives can work with GMP to make Bolton a safer place to visit, live and work. It's been unfortunate there have been some fatal incidents involving speeding recently but I appreciate the swift action of GMP and I am glad to see this improved focus in Bolton."
